Even though Brigitte isn’t originally from Berlin, both her family and herself have a deep connection to the city that goes back decades. “My father was born in Berlin, but then left the city between the wars due to the conditions after World War I. He moved to the south of Germany with his first family, but Berlin remained an important narrative in our family.” Brigitte studied English, History and Geography at colleges in Freiburg and London and became a teacher. In 1993, Brigitte then moved to Berlin with her own family. By that time, she had already worked as a teacher and headmistress for several schools in Germany.
In 2008, she became the headmistress of the famous gymnasium Graues Kloster in Berlin, which was founded in 1574. Originally, it was a school for the sons of the officials of the Prussian king. Brigitte was the first woman to lead the prestigious school and it took some time for her to prevail herself in the male dominated environment, but she still enjoyed her time as headmistress. In 2016, Brigitte retired from the school and is enjoying life in Berlin now. “I would not say that I am completely rediscovering the city. But I go to the theatre more often and I visit more concerts. And I finally ride my bike more often!”
Brigitte’s Berlin Tips
THE BEST STREET
Giesebrechtstraße in Charlottenburg!
THE BEST RESTAURANT
THE PERFECT NIGHT
Have nice dinner, then go to the Deutsches Theater to see a play or to the Philharmonie if you get tickets. It is always pure enjoyment! Oh, and plays directed by Robert Wilson at the Berliner Ensemble are fantastic.
THE PLACE TO MEET LOCALS
In restaurants and coffee shops in Charlottenburg you can always meet interesting people.
THE ART HOTSPOT
Right in front of my house is actually the Berggrünmuseum, which has some famous Picasso and Matisse paintings. And the museum has a great history: Berggrün was a Jewish refugee, but returned to his hometown Berlin and bequeathed his extraordinary art collection to the city. But I also love the Berlinische Gallerie or the Gemäldegallerie.
